Book Review for Undercover Wish
Blending Gilded Age Intrigue with Heart and Humor
What is Undercover Wish about?
Mystery, social justice, and romantic suspense weave through Danielle Grandinetti’s Undercover Wish [Amazon affiliate link] (the prequel novella to her new Di Stasio Giornaliste Agency series [Amazon affiliate link]) in a fantastic retelling of the original Aladdin tale. This Gilded Age romantic mystery reimagines the classic tale into an 1892 Chicago setting as the city gears up for the monumental World’s Columbian Exposition. It’s packed with surprises that honor the original fairy tale while delivering a period-authentic spin.
At the center of the story is Ali Di Stasio, a fearless stunt reporter and orphaned Italian immigrant who will stop at nothing to expose corruption and protect the vulnerable—especially the children at the orphanage that became her home after her own tragedy. Ali lives by her wits, navigating Chicago’s shadowy alleys on her quest for proof against the powerful men preying on the powerless. When she targets a dangerous scheme tied to the upcoming World’s Fair, she crosses paths with Griff Moorland, the frustrated heir to a vast shipping empire. But Griff isn’t the villain she expected—he’s chasing the same truths, desperate to escape the web of forced marriage and shady dealings his father has woven around him.
Ali’s street-smart grit pairs perfectly with Griff’s elite social connections. As they race to unmask the business mogul orchestrating the whole conspiracy, they must navigate the business world surrounding the corrupt steel industry.
And because this is an Aladdin retelling, you can experience two genie figures (true to the original version). Here, they appear as witty, scene-stealing lady benefactors who swoop in when the characters need aid, advice, or comic relief. They’re clever women who have spent years helping the underprivileged across Chicago. It’s a brilliant nod to the source material that feels fresh and fun.
What genre is Undercover Wish?
This is a Christian historical romantic suspense. Even though romance isn’t my favorite genre, it seems that most of the options for Christian mysteries right now include that as part of the stories. Danielle delivers it well here, but the genies remain my favorite part of the story.
I received a free ebook copy of this story, but all of the opinions included in this review are my own. And yes, I’ll be buying a copy for my bookshelf.
